Time flies when you’re having fun, and this past year has definitely flown by for the folks at Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland. It was one year ago this week that Nelson’s second custom microbrewery opened for business.

Steve Crandall, Devils Backbone owner and founder, in a May 2006 photo where survey flags marked an area that would one day be part of the brewery grounds.
It was a long road to opening with lots of hurdles to cross.

The beams for what is now Java Depot going up in December 2007. Notice in the background DBBC is not yet constructed.

By July of 2008 much of the brewery's framework was done. Executive Chef, Shawn Goodwin, Brewmaster Jason Oliver, and Crandall inside the brewery under construction last year.
Congratulations to the Devil’s Backbone for a truly magnificent first year. The structure is an interesting architectural delight, inside and outside, while the bustling, upbeat vitality of the business within has given folks something to cheer about during the recession. It’s certainly not just a place to eat and drink ; all the elements combine to provide a positive experience and energy for everyone who goes in. Also it gives employment to many Nelson men and women!!
