Concert at Cardinal Point Winery to Benefit Paramount Theater
June 9 Event Will Feature Cashmere Jungle Lords

An event partnering The Paramount with Afton’s Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery will provide an opportunity to enjoy good music and good wine while benefiting Charlottesville’s historic theater. On Saturday, June 9, Cashmere Jungle Lords will perform at Cardinal Point from 4 to 8 pm as part of their Summer Concert Series. Patrons are invited to bring a picnic basket and spend the day in the vineyard’s beautiful setting at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Paramount Theater.

The band that College Music Journal called “one of the South’s best kept secrets,” Cashmere Jungle Lords is a dynamic trio from Richmond, Virginia who describe their sound as “southern fried salsa surfabilly” or “western surf jungle rock.” The current line-up includes Dominic Carpin (the inventor of amp-surfing) on guitar and vocals and “Jungle” Jim Kaylis on drums and backing vocals, with Bryan Martin and John Dacey sharing duties on bass and backing vocals.

The Lords’ hybridized rootsy sound gives the group far-reaching appeal. They perform electric music in a somewhat standard bass guitar and drum format, but also deliver an acoustic “swamp set” incorporating double bass fiddle, congas, bongos, tambourine, and maracas. The swamp set has graced the airwaves numerous times live on college radio across the nation. The band is currently at work on their next release, Bloodstone Follies. All the original tracks from their last release, Southern Barber Supply, found their way onto MTV Real World and Road Rules episodes.

The group has also released two critically-acclaimed vinyl records — Oodjie Boodjie Night Night and a self-titled EP — and has a repertoire of over 150 songs, including original hits as well as unique versions of songs like Jezebel, Whatever Lola Wants, and a dance rock interpretation of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. The Lords have played with national acts such as The Who, Bruce Hornsby, Widespread Panic, Los Straightjackets, Buckwheat Zydeco, They Might Be Giants, and Southern Culture on the Skids.

The June 9 event will be held at Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery, located near Route 250 in Afton at 9423 Batesville Road. Admission is $10 and includes a complimentary wine glass. Picnicking is strongly encouraged, but no outside alcoholic beverages are permitted (Cardinal Point wines will be available for sale by the glass and by the bottle). Guests will also have the opportunity to learn more about The Paramount and the theater’s 2007 Summer Season.

Rain may cancel the event, so please check Cardinal Point’s website, www.cardinalpointwinery.com or call the winery at 540.456.8400 on the day of the show if in doubt.
