…ELEVATED FIRE DANGER IN EFFECT FROM 11AM THROUGH 8PM THIS
EVENING FOR MOST OF MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, AND EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA
Elevated fire weather conditions are expected today across most
of Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and Virginia.
Relative humidity values are expected to drop back to around 20 to
25 percent Tuesday afternoon, with some areas possibly seeing
relative humidity values below 20 percent for a couple of hours.
West winds gust 15 to 20 mph in the valleys, and 20 to 25 mph on
the eastern slopes of the mountains. Gusts could occasionally be
close to 30 mph. This will result in the continued drying of fine
fuels.
Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution if handling
open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Also, dispose of
cigarette butts, matches, and other flammable items in appropriate
containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans.
Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily
ignite and spread fire quickly.
For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions,
and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state`s
forestry or environmental protection website.

After coordination with local land managers, a Fire Danger
Statement has been issued for counties within southeast West
Virginia, southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. The

equipment that creates sparks. Dispose of cigarette buttes,
matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers.
Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry

You may remember us telling you about the closure of Margaritas in Nellysford (in this post here) last October after 10 years in operation. Gibran Carnevali was one of the owners that opened the original restaurant. He’s now involved in the opening of El Cazador in Scottsville.
One thing people who are used to the old Margaritas menu will find is a totally revamped and updated one!
Congrats to everyone at El Cazador, go by and see them!

]]>Roseland / Arrington Area
Nelson County, Virginia
Just after midnight on March 15, 2024 Deputies with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the Nellysford area of Rt. 151 for speeding. Upon making the initial traffic stop, the suspect vehicle failed to stop for law enforcement. The suspect vehicle increased its speed and began driving erratically, crossing the center line several times. The vehicle continued this behavior all the way into the Roseland area. Assisting deputies successfully deployed tire deflation devices in attempt to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. Although both front tires had been deflated, the vehicle continued to evade deputies to the intersection of Rt. 151 and Rt. 56 (Tye Brooke Hwy) where the vehicle struck a marked Sheriff’s Deputy patrol vehicle. After the collision, the vehicle continued to Rt. 29 where it turned north bound and then continued to Harvey Rd. The vehicle attempted to evade deputies by driving off road, through a ditch, over and embankment and through a church parking lot. Again the vehicle struck a Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol vehicle before driving through the yard of a residence and then striking a fence and going over an embankment where it stopped. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. A short foot pursuit followed where deputies were able to apprehend the suspect without further incident.
The suspect was transported to UVA medical center for treatment to minor injuries sustained during the crash. No injuries to law enforcement were reported. The driver was later identified as 28-year-old Shaquan Wilson of Waynesboro VA, who at the time was wanted out of the City of Waynesboro for Felony possession of Dangerous drugs. Mr. Wilson was taken before a magistrate and subsequently charged with the following…
• Felony Eluding 46.2-817
• Felony Assault and Battery Law Enforcement x2 18.2-57
• Felon in possession of a firearm 18.2-308.2

]]>As of 8:45 AM Wednesday morning. Two people are in critical condition with life threatening injuries at UVA Medical Center after a Tuesday night crash in Beech Grove.
“Our dispatch center received a call Tuesday evening at 7:51 PM about a severe crash in Beech Grove on Route 664. Our first deputy was there on the scene just after 8PM. Virginia State Police was also called. The patients were transported to UVA via ambulance,” Nelson County Sheriff Mark Embrey told us Wednesday morning.
Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets said Wintergreen Police units were on the scene within a few minutes at 7:57 PM and the first fire-rescue unit was there at 8:07 PM. “We had a horrible amount of fog coming down off the mountain that critically limited our visibility. Our other station responded from Stoney Creek as well. They were joined by a Nelson deputy a few minutes later.”
After reaching out to our contact at Virginia State Police Headquarters in Richmond we got a bit more addition information.
“At 8:00 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Nelson County. A vehicle traveling in the 3100 block of Beech Grove Rd. ran off the road and struck a tree. The driver and passenger were both transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

Some snow flurries and snow squalls were expected Saturday afternoon in the higher elevations. But, the accumulating snow experienced up at Wintergreen was a bit of a surprise.
— Wintergreen Resort (@WintergreenVA) February 24, 2024
A snow emergency message was sent out by fire and police agencies around 5:30 PM Saturday.
“We are currently experiencing extremely hazardous road conditions on the mountain. Several car accidents are in progress. Wintergreen Drive has been closed at the Police Department. Please do not travel within Wintergreen or attempt to return to Wintergreen until this situation is resolved.”
At 6:56 PM an all roads open message was sent out.
“All roads are now open. Thank you for your patience.”
At one point traffic was stopped and backed up from the gatehouse below all the way out to Beech Grove Road. Numerous wrecks with cars in ditches were reported at several locations on the mountain.

]]>Nellysford
Nelson County, Virginia
A friend of mine from my high school days now lives in Florida. Joe jokes with me often how his late father would call him daily from his home state of Tennessee and give him the daily obituary report from the local paper. Now we joke with each other that we are sort of doing the same. I say this, not to make fun of the piece I am writing to you today, but I know the two people I am writing about here would laugh as well. It seems as though I have been doing this a lot lately. If you read our site very much you know that I have penned a lot of stories about those leaving us recently.
I was talking to my friend and dentist Jim Rice last night on the phone. In the course of the conversation her said, “that was sad about Chuck and Lee Brown, you know we live very close to them here in Stoney Creek.” I said, “what happened?” He told me they had both passed away within a few days of each other.
I knew I hadn’t seen Chuck out lately in his small blue car with the fake hands of a body hanging out of the back, his license plate read ISpy. Chuck, and Lee were sort of spies, they both worked for the FBI back in the day. Chuck worked for other secret agencies before that, but well, it’s a secret. They laughingly got the nickname Charlie Brown because of their very names!
Here’s a little more about Chuck from his official bio we included in a story on him over a decade ago.
“He was raised as an ‘army brat’ and as a dependent lived in numerous states and Europe where his father was assigned. His father graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and when it came time for Chuck to choose to play basketball for the University of Kentucky or accept an appointment to West Point, he chose basketball. While attending the U of K Chuck played basketball and joined the Kappa Alpha fraternity. His average score as a ‘point guard’ for the team was 24 points a game. His couch was proud of him. His average score in the classroom was 24 points a test. His parents were not proud of him. His fraternity brothers at Kappa Alpha didn’t know the difference between basketball and mathematics and that explained why the fraternity was always on ‘social probation’ and remains to this day on probation as confirmed by a recent visit. His best friends were his fraternity brothers and states, “ but I can’t remember their names and that explains why I probably averaged 24 points a test score.”
Chuck’s parents asked him what he was going to do now as a result of leaving college. He said, “I’m going to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation”. And he did after an extensive background investigation. The FBI put Chuck through the ‘ringer’ requiring him to work many different shift schedules; however, in return, the FBI also put Chuck through Fordham University. After earning his college degree, Chuck earned the privilege of meeting all the requirements for Special Agent training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. Chuck continued his career with the Bureau for a number of years including voluntary time serving as an officer in the U.S. Army Special Forces during the period leading up to and including the invasion of the Bay of Pigs. Chuck is proud to have donned a Green Beret. “De Oppresso Libre.”
I first met Chuck back in the days when he drove a classic 1980s Mercedes Benz 4 door diesel with a license plate saying Fordham60. That car was a beast! My wife is a Fordham grad, so when we ran into Chuck and Lee at the monthly RVCC pancake breakfast, we eventually made the connection to the car. He and Yvette went through endless memories of how Fordham had changed over time. We we became friends then and there for the next 20 years or so. Both Chuck and Lee were pilots, so am I, so those conversations went on forever too!
A little known fact, Chuck provided background security here in Nelson during that same year in 2008 for members of Synchronicity on Adail Road. Some of their members had been murdered in a bombing at a hotel in India during a conference. International press descended on Nellysford for days. Chuck was quietly in the background managing the security around the event and using his prior skills in the FBI to help assist international law enforcement in tracking down those responsible. Here’s where we broke that particular story as it happened.
Chuck, Lee and I would often meet up for lunch at Basic Necessities in Nellysford or then Stoney Creek Bar & Grill (now Iron & Ale) and later Margaratas in Nellysford. Lee had multiple sclerosis and as the years ticked by you could see the major decline in her heath. I’d see Chuck in his, and her, final years daily picking up food somewhere to take back to Lee at home. We’d chat in a parking lot somewhere and briefly catchup, but I knew time was running out for both. Chuck was dedicated to the very end. In his mid and late 80s he was out in all kinds of weather making sure Lee had her favorites. Within the last 2-3 years she went downhill quickly and was more or less confined to her home.
Once Margaratis closed in October of 2023, I rarely saw Chuck out anymore. And I did notice I began seeing less and less of him on the road. It’s why I was saddened and shocked once Jim Rice told me about their deaths Tuesday night. Neither of us knew about their memorials held in mid February.
I will miss Chuck and Lee both. We had so many great conversations over the years. Their passing is a continual change we are seeing, especially in Stoney Creek as longtime residents there age out.
Chuck, you both have a great view now. Rest easy, you did well and had a very good run.
Here’s more on them in their obits here: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/newsvirginian/name/charles-brown-obituary?id=54320074

Below a post where I mentioned the Pinery River 5G cell site had just gone online a few days before the one live now in Roseland.
Though there’s still plenty of gaps along 151 in the southern end of Nelson, this does help eliminate many of the dead zones.
Another VZW tower in Schuyler has been in the process of getting activated over the past several days as well!
