Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Route 220 (Jackson River Road/Potomac River Road) – Flagger traffic control between 0.6 north of Route 84 (Mill Gap Road) and Route 632 (The Pines Road) for paving operations, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through August 26.

Mile marker 97 to 95, westbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to various bridges, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of August 3. Occasional overnight on-ramp closures at exit 96. During ramp closures, traffic will be detoured to exit 94.

Mile marker 219 to 221, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound and southbound alternating lane closures between Route 616 (Dam Town Road/Fort Defiance Road) and Staunton city limits for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Route 250 (Jefferson Highway, Fishersville) – Eastbound and westbound overnight mobile lane closures between southbound I-81 on- and off-ramps and Route 792 (Brand Station Road/Sangers Lane), including closures as needed of southbound I-81 on-ramp for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of July 28.

Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Eastbound and westbound 24/7 shoulder closures in area of I-81 interchange exit 235 for turn lane construction, estimated completion in May 2024. Flagger traffic control as needed for nighttime and overnight work.

Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Overnight closures of ramps onto southbound I-81 as needed for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of July 28.

Mile marker 240 to 257, northbound and southbound – Overnight slow-roll traffic control as needed Monday through Friday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for placement of bridge beams. Overnight single lane closures on Monday night from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for bridge work. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project and Route 720 bridge replacement.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and University Boulevard for bridge and roadway work, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 28. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement.

*NEW* Route 33 Business (Spotswood Trail, Stanardsville) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures and flagger control as needed between Route 33 (Stanardsville Bypass) and Elkton town limits for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Route 259 (West Lee Street, Broadway) – Traffic uses temporary Linville Creek bridge between Route 42 (Main Street) and Route 1411 (Shenandoah Avenue). Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacement with estimated project completion in November 2023.

*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 606 (River Road) and Route 7 Business just east of Berryville for shoulder widening and rumble strip installation. Eastbound lane closures 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays. Westbound lane closures between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays or weeknights. Work begins July 17 with estimated completion December 2023.

Lynchburg District Traffic Alerts July 17-23, 2023

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is planned; however, work may be delayed/canceled due to weather or other issues. Items in italics contain new/updated information. For up-to-date information, call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org.

District-wide activities:

Crews will perform various activities throughout the district to include, but are not limited to bridge & guardrail maintenance, brush/tree/limb cutting, pothole/surface/shoulder work, surface treatment/paving operations, work orders, mowing, boom axing, drainage repairs/work and roadside cleanup.

Bedford County:

Route 221 (Forest Rd.) intersections Route 1425 Graves Mill and Route 1426 Gristmill Rd. Lane closures and changes in traffic pattern are likely. Expect lane closures on Route 221. Signing, Barricades, Flaggers and Police will be in place to direct traffic. Starting May 1, 2022 and est. completion, end of July, 2023.

Route 360 (James D. Hagood Highway) from Route 607 (Rodgers Chapel Rd.) to Route 92 (Clover Rd.) – Safety improvements: Shoulder widening, Rumble strips, Guardrail replacement. Lane closures expected. Estimated completion November 2023.
Route 657 Closure – Motorists should expect delays due to a pipe replacement on Route 657 in Halifax County on July 10, 2023. The Department of Transportation will provide adequate signs for the closure and detour of this portion of Route 657(Felix Rd). The detour utilizes Route 667 (Pumping Hill Rd) and Route 650 (Mulberry Rd). Expected completion September, 2023.

Lynchburg:

Route 29/460 (Campbell Ave–Concord Turnpike) – Bridge replacement. Northbound 29/ eastbound and westbound 460 speed limit 45 mph. Anticipate shifting traffic onto the new structure on June 30. Lane closures and changes in traffic pattern are likely. Completion approximately August 6, 2023.

Nelson County:

Route 60 over James River – Bridge deck replacement. Lane closures and changes
in traffic patterns. Estimated completion July 14, 2024.
Paving Operations – Be aware that paving operations will be taking place on various sections of Route 151 between Route 707 and Route 250 from July 10-21, 2023, with rumble strips and inlaid markers to be installed in September. This work will be done at night, with lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Pittsylvania County:

Route 29 at Bannister River – Road closure for bridgework. Motorists should expect delays on Route 29 at the Bannister River in the Tightsqueeze area of Pittsylvania County. Lane closures and changes in traffic pattern are likely. Estimated completion August, 2023.
Route 840 (Water Oak Road) – Bridge repairs. Route 840 (Water Oak Road) will be closed from Route 612 (Wyatt Farm Road) to Route 818 (Mapleton Drive) from July 24 until approximately August 4. A detour will be established with clear signage.

CULPEPER — The following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the next week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones.(NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

Interstate 64, expect mobile work zone with right shoulder closures between mile marker 100 and mile marker 124 in the eastbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway – Slope work. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 1102 (Michie Tavern Lane) and the Fluvanna County line in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(NEW) Route 631 (Rio Road) – Bridge inspection work. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 1481 (Pen Park Lane) and Putt Putt Place in the northbound and southbound lanes, Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(NEW) Route 631 (Rio Road) – Debris pick-up. Expect left lane and left should closures between Route 651 (Wakefield Road) and Route 652 (Old Brook Road in the southbound lanes, Monday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Route 600 (Watts Passage) – Bridge repairs. Expect all lanes closed to through traffic at Route 700 (Watts Farm Road), daily. Project completion expected Nov. 20, 2023.

(NEW) Route 810 (Blackwells Hollow Road) – Bridge superstructure repairs/replacement. Road closed between Route 629 (Browns Gap Turnpike) and Route 687 (Shiffletts Mill Road). Please pay attention to message boards and use alternate routes around the work area. Expected completion date is August 22, 2023.

Culpeper County

New roadway construction – Expect road closures and detours with flaggers for a new roundabout, in the following areas:

U.S. 522 (West Evans Street), closed between North West Street and Gardner Street. Follow detour signs around the intersection. Project completion date: August 31, 2023.
U.S. 522 (West Evans Street), closed between North Blue Ridge Avenue and Aspen Street, in the northbound lanes, daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 663 (Alanthus Road) – Utility work under VDOT permit. Expect alternating lane closures with flaggers between Route 685 (Fleetwood Heights Road) and Route 1022 (Brenridge Drive) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fauquier County

(NEW) Updating directional signs – Expect right shoulder closures, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the following areas:

(NEW) U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Other construction. Expect right shoulder closures between Route 680 (Pinewood Court) and U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, noon to 6 a.m.

Route 638 (Turkey Ridge Road) – Bridge replacement. Road will be closed between Route 634 (Bull Yearling Road) and Route 637 (South River Road). Project completion date, December 15, 2023.

Louisa County

Tree removal operations – Expect lane closures, in the eastbound lanes, daily, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the following areas:

Interstate 64 at Exit 136 (Gordonsville/Palmyra).
Interstate 64 at Exit 143 (Louisa/Ferncliff).

Interstate 64 – Ditch cleaning operations. Expect right shoulder closures between mile marker 131 and mile marker 147 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

U.S. 33 (Sout Spotswood Trail) – Shoulder repairs. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 22 (Louisa Road) and U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway), in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Madison County

U.S. 29 (South Seminole Trail) – Utility work under VDOT permit. Expect right lane closures between Route 677 (Estes Lane) and Route 621 (Seville Road) in the southbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 231 (Orange Road) – Tree trimming operations. Expect flagging operations between U.S. 29 (South Seminole Trail) and the Orange County line, daily in the northbound and southbound lanes, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Route 707 (Nethers Road) – Bridge replacement. Expect total road closure at Route 749 (Moon Road). Please follow posted detour signs around the work zone. Expected completion date August 10, 2023.

Rappahannock County

(NEW) Mowing operations – Expect mobile work zone with right shoulder closures in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the following areas:

U.S. 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway), between the Warren County line and U.S. 211 (Lee Highway).
U.S. 522 (Sperryville Pike), between Route 231 (F T Valley Road) and the Culpeper County line.
Route 231 (F T Valley Road), between U.S. 522 (Sperryville Pike) and the Madison County line.

U.S. 211 (Lee Highway) – Paving operations. Expect alternating lane closures between U.S. 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) and U.S. 211 (Warren Avenue) in the westbound lanes, daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
