The story of a yak on the run came to a sad ending this Friday morning after being hit by a car in Lovingston along US 29. The driver that hit the yak left the scene. The yak was so severely injured that it had to be put down at the scene.

Below the verbatim press release from VSP Richmond:

“At 9:06 a.m. Friday (Sept. 27), Virginia State Police was called to Route 29 near Cannery Loop in Lovingston for a large animal on the side of the highway. When the trooper arrived on scene, he discovered the animal was the yak that had escaped its owners two weeks ago in Nelson County. The yak had been struck by a vehicle and was severely injured. Contact was made with the owners who granted permission for the animal, which was suffering due to its injuries, to be euthanized at the scene.

The vehicle that struck the yak had left the scene before the trooper arrived. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run vehicle can contact state police at 434-293-3223 or questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
