Roseland
Nelson County, Virginia

This comes as no surprise to those of us living in the shadows of Mac Country Store in Roseland near the intersection of Route 151 and Crabtree Falls Highway. For years they’ve been serving up delicious fried chicken! The best around. Since current owner Betty Brown took it over several years ago, some top notch potato salad and pimento cheese have entered the picture too. Mac’s has been a long time advertiser in the pages of BRL, touting their yummy fried chicken.

Recently, a national writer by the name of Hawk Krall remembered stopping at Mac’s over ten years ago, and remembered the chicken. Years later he finally found the place again. Paydirt! Hawk recently wrote about revisiting Mac’s in the article below for Saveur Magazine. It’s a very nice writeup. Check it out!

Above, back in May 2009 in our original charter magazine, Nelson County Life, we looked at the history of Mac’s and when Betty took it over.

Pretty neat!!

Congrats to everyone at Mac’s 🙂

  1. Hi David here , I recently hiked the Priest mountain and on October 30th i stopped by mac’s , and i ordered a DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER !!! , i was expecting the run of the mill burger (thin patty) boring ingredients ETC , and i was noticing why the line was so long and the wait was over 15 min ? i had to put my drink back in the cooler , then i noticed the nice store clerk making small talk to a person waiting in line , saying we need a bigger kitchen and more fryers and if i went in the back we would further slow things down as we would be in each others way , but they finally called my name and then i saw it , the DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER !!! boy was this thing HUGE, when i got in the car and opened it up steam escaped and the cheese was dripping (wish i had a pic) i do but not sure how to do it , let me just say one thing , this is the best cheeseburger i have EVER eaten , words cannot describe how good it was , i will forever stop in and order food ! i am 75 miles away and it is well worth it , plus with all the hype about the fried chicken , i cannot wait to try that also .
    David
