Foggy Conditions Cause Numerous Traffic Accidents On Afton Mountain Along I-64

©2015 Blue Ridge Life Magazine : Photo By Yvette Stafford : Traffic was backed up along Route 151 south from Route 250 Sunday afternoon – November 29, 2015 – after numerous traffic accidents on I-64 atop Afton Mountain caused gridlock in both directions creating backups along other highways as people looked for alternate routes.

After a beautiful Thanksgiving, many people were heading back home on Sunday to start their post holiday work week. Combine heavy traffic and fog with near zero visibility on Afton Mountain along I-64 and you had a recipe for disaster. Early Sunday afternoon numerous multi-car accidents starting happening on the interstate.

Screenshot VDOT camera network: Fog was so heavy on Afton Mountain Sunday afternoon that visibility was near zero. This is the camera at Exit 99 where I-64 and Route 250 meet.
At one point the entire westbound side of I-64 atop Afton Mountain was closed as accident scenes were cleared.

Photo courtesy of Diane Givens: Though most of the accidents had been cleared just before 3PM Sunday – traffic was still having a hard time getting up Route 250 on Afton Mountain to gain access to I-64. This photo shows traffic on the left side headed up the mountain around 2:50 PM Sunday.
In addition to I-64 accidents, numerous accidents occurred along I-81 as well.
Weather conditions on the mountain are not expected to improve for the next several hours on the mountain.
