Five years ago today, Devils Backbone Brewing [2] in the Beech Grove / Roseland area of Nelson County, VA opened its doors for business. “I never envisioned we would be what we are five years later,” Founder & Owner Steve Crandall told us during a recent lunch about turning 5. In November 2008 it was just what’s now called the Basecamp that consisted of the charter brewery and the accompanying restaurant. A brewpub that, just again, won Small Brewpub & Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival last month in Denver. [3]

“Back then we just thought the Basecamp restaurant and brewery would be it. Now we have a huge expansion underway at our Outpost facility [6] in Lexington, and there’s even more exciting news on the horizon in the near future,” Steve continued. That expansion is adding tons of new space to the production brewery in Rockbridge County, VA [7]
