…PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT…

.AN AXIS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN WILL MOVE
ACROSS THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THE BOUNDARY MAY
STALL ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE THIS EVENING WITH SEVERAL STORMS
TRACKING NORTHEAST OVER THE SAME AREA OVERNIGHT. THIS WILL CREATE
A HIGH THREAT LEVEL FOR FLASH FLOODING.

THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR

* PORTIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA…VIRGINIA AND
SOUTHEAST WEST VIRGINIA…INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS…IN
NORTH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA…SURRY. IN VIRGINIA…ALLEGHANY
VA…AMHERST…BATH…BEDFORD…BOTETOURT…CARROLL…CRAIG…
FLOYD…FRANKLIN…GILES…MONTGOMERY…PATRICK…PULASKI…
ROANOKE AND ROCKBRIDGE. IN SOUTHEAST WEST VIRGINIA…MONROE.

* THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.

* HEAVY RAIN OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS HAS SATURATED THE GROUND.
AS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVE ACROSS THE REGION THIS
AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT…RAINFALL RATES UP TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR
ARE POSSIBLE…WITH TOTAL AMOUNTS BY MONDAY MORNING UP TO TWO
INCHES. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNT ARE POSSIBLE ALONG THE CREST OF
THE BLUE RIDGE.

* MUCH OF THE RAIN THAT FALLS IN HEAVY DOWNPOURS WILL QUICKLY
RUNOFF AND CAUSE FLASH FLOODING OF CREEKS AND STREAMS. FLOOD
PRONE AREAS…SUCH AS LOW WATER CROSSINGS AND OTHER LOW LYING
AREAS… ALL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO FLOOD…ESPECIALLY WHERE
HEAVY RAIN HAS FALLEN DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS. MUD AND DEBRIS
SLIDES ARE LIKELY IN LOCATIONS WITH STEEP TERRAIN.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

THE PUBLIC IS ENCOURAGED TO REPORT FLOODING OR RAINFALL AMOUNTS
OF MORE THAN ONE INCH TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE VIA EMAIL
