Flood Watch / Flood Statement
Statement as of 4:50 PM EDT on July 02, 2013

…Flash Flood Watch is cancelled…

The Flash Flood Watch for portions of Maryland…the District of
Columbia and Virginia has been cancelled.

Rainfall today has not been heavy enough to facilitate the need
for the watch. This evening’s heaviest rainfall is expected to
fall east of the Chesapeake Bay.

* UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT

* SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY THROUGH LATE THIS
EVENING. THE MOST WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED THIS
LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EVENING HOURS. SOME SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTAIN LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL. LOCALIZED
RAINFALL AMOUNTS AROUND 2 TO 3 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE WATCH
AREA. MOST OF THE RAIN WILL FALL IN SHORT PERIODS OF
TIME…CAUSING THE POSSIBILITY FOR FLASH FLOODING TO DEVELOP.

* IF FLASH FLOODING WERE TO DEVELOP…ROADS WILL BECOME
IMPASSABLE ALONG WITH CREEKS AND STREAMS QUICKLY RISING OUT OF
THEIR BANKS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

…PERIODS OF VERY HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE INTO TONIGHT…

.A DEEP SOUTHERLY FLOW OF MOISTURE ACROSS THE REGION WILL COMBINE
WITH UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES TO RESULT IN PERIODIC ROUNDS OF
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TODAY AND TONIGHT. SOME OF THE SHOWERS
AND STORMS MAY BE SLOW MOVING…AND TRAIN ACROSS THE SAME AREA
RESULTING IN ENOUGH RAINFALL IN A SHORT PERIOD TO PRODUCE FLASH
FLOODING OF CREEKS AND STREAMS.

AMHERST…APPOMATTOX…BUCKINGHAM AND CAMPBELL. IN SOUTH
CENTRAL VIRGINIA…CHARLOTTE AND HALIFAX.

* UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT TONIGHT

* BANDS OR CLUSTERS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE
RAINFALL RATES OF UP TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR ESPECIALLY THIS
AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING. RAINFALL TOTALS OF BETWEEN 1 AND
3 INCHES COULD OCCUR.

* RUNOFF FROM THE VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS COULD CAUSE FLOODING OF
SMALLER CREEKS AND STREAMS…AS WELL AS LOW LYING AREAS
ESPECIALLY IN SPOTS THAT HAVE RECEIVED HEAVY RAIN OVER THE
LAST FEW DAYS.
