“The search for a missing inmate was suspended shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday (June 19, 2013). With the assistance of the US Marshals Service, Karan Batra 44, was located in Washington, D.C., and taken into custody without incident at approximately 6:45 p.m. Virginia State Police, Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Department of Corrections spent the day conducting extensive ground searches and following up on numerous tips of possible sightings.

We will not be commenting as to how Batra was located.

For more information about Batra – to include pending charges, etc. – please contact the VA Department of Corrections, as he will be returned to their custody.”

At approximately 9:35 a.m. this morning, a male offender in the custody of the Virginia Department of Corrections walked away from a work unit at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave, Virginia. The Virginia DOC has activated emergency response plans to apprehend the offender assigned to Cold Springs Work Center #10. State police and local law enforcement are on the scene. The offender has been identified as Karan Batra, 44 years of age, 5’ 5” and 165 pounds, (photo enclosed). If you see this individual, do not approach but instead call your local police or 911. Safety is our highest priority, and we are working rapidly to apprehend this individual.
