Nelson County, Virginia
For the second time in less than a week folks in Nelson County are encountering snowfall. This winter season has been anything but boring! A Winter Storm Warning is already in effect. By 5PM Tuesday a light coating of snow covered the ground in Nelson, but most roads were just wet as temps hovered above freezing much of the day in the valley portions of the county. But temps have fallen below freezing now and accumulating snow is likely on roadways as well. Above 2000 feet temps have been below freezing much of the afternoon.
Check out the view from TrafficLand’s camera up on Afton Mountain there to your right in the sidebar below the video widget. Heavy fog was also occurring on the mountain just before dark Tuesday.
A more substantial winter storm looks to be forming for the weekend. However, the rumors of 3-4 feet of snow are totally unfounded and untrue. We will be hammering out the predicted amounts in future updates in the next 24-36 hours.

It has been snowing up here on top of Wintergreen mountain since early afternoon. Ruler in the snow shows 4.5″ with some variation as of 10 pm Tuesday evening. Moth flake consistency. This time the snow clearing operations up here geared up early and there are a lot of abrasives and salt down on the roads up here.
Very good to hear from you up there John. Thanks for the report. It’s changed to a freezing rain / snow mix here in the valley, not good! -T-
