There is light at the end of the tunnel soon, and it’s the sun! The unending rain will actually be coming to an end by Friday night into Saturday. We’ll begin to see improvement as the day wears on Friday into the nighttime hours. The coverage and intensity will be much less on Friday as the coastal low responsible for the rain, and snow in the higher elevations, pulls out to sea away from Virginia.
The same system responsible for all of the rain dropped 2-4 inches of snow up in the higher elevations of Nelson County overnight Wednesday into Thursday. A freezing rain advisory was also issued Thursday night until 7AM Friday due to temps hovering right around freezing up in the mountains all day Thursday into the nighttime hours. It expired as temps remained a degree to two above freezing in the mountains Friday morning.
The nasty weather proved deadly here in Nelson very early Thursday morning. 66 year old Al Fleming of Amherst was on his way to Saunder Brothers on Route 56 in Piney River, Virginia. He was an independent delivery person for the company. Mr. Fleming hit a tree that had fallen across the highway at the Tye River bridge. Mr. Fleming survived that crash only to be killed by an oncoming truck that was trying to avoid hitting his vehicle stalled in the roadway. Heavy rains and winds contributed to the tree uprooting and falling across Route 56.
As the low pressure area continues to pull out to sea over the next 24 hours, conditions will gradually improve.
