Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia

The calendar may still say October, but the first snow of the season fell last night up on the mountain at Wintergreen Resort. Our Paul Purpura was out grabbing some of these images. They got between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of snow. Not a lot, but snow none the less!

Most areas in the valley saw nothing, but on the mountains generally above 2000 feet a nice dusting fell.

“I awoke to the sound of plows this morning, so I knew we must have had a little bit of snow overnight,” Paul told us via instant message this morning when we were coordinating the upload of the photos.

The overnight low temp in the valley only reached 41° while temps in the mountains dropped to 29° by Sunday morning. Just enough to have the snow stick nicely!

No where near enough to fire up the lift, but it won't be very much longer!

As cold as it was Sunday morning, ironically the coming week will have temps back in the 60's!

Though certainly not unheard of, October snows, in particular mid October, are pretty rare in Central Virginia.

Certainly a sign of things to come in the next few weeks as we leave behind those carefree warm days of Summer.

Last year the weather cooperated just enough for a little head start on ski season, we'll have to see about this year!

Usually measurable snowfall does occur until the months of November and December in this region.

Excellent shots Paul!
