Nelson County, Virginia

For months folks have been wondering what will be opening inside the old Arrington Depot building in Beech Grove near Devils Backbone Brewery. The 1870’s depot was moved from Arrington and reassembled in December 2007 by property owner Steve Crandall. It briefly opened as a breakfast coffee/coffee house before becoming coming vacant over the past several months.

This past Friday night husband wife team, Richard Boyd and Nancy Kern, held the soft opening of their Java Depot. The newly renovated coffee house and restaurant is open for regular business just in time for the upcoming Independence Day weekend. “We have espresso, cappuccino, lattes, regular, decaff, everything you would want and all kinds of different flavors,” Nancy told our Paul Purpura when he was there Friday evening.

“We’ll also be serving breakfast and lunch. We have full menus, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, croissants, hash browns, toast, waffles, scones, along with lots of soups, salads and sandwiches, and quesadillas,” just to name a few Nancy continues.

  3. WOW It is a small world. i am friends with your brother Tom having worked with him on the OBX. And the capt of my Bateauu Rockfish Runner lives very near to your place. Get in touch with Dave and Linda Roberts on Bee Road. They are great people and their son Brian owns the boat.

Good luck and i will look you up next trip there!

  4. I have eaten there twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. The food is EXCELLENT – interesting menu, fresh ingredients, breads from Albemarle Baking Company. Yum!!! I can’t comment on the coffee because I don’t drink it, but they sure have a lot of choices. They also had Izze sodas and Tazo teas, in addition to the usual beverages. I will definitely be going back!

  5. There are lots of articles lately on the big value of a great coffee shop to the community (one presently on REALCENTRALVA). We all wish Nancy and Richard the very best as they become a part of the Beech Grove/Nellysford community.

  6. Hi Rev Thompson. My understanding is they have a public router connected to Wildblue Sat Service, so while they do have some public internet access, it’s not true high speed. The only locations that I know offering real DSL or better wi-fi are Ambrosia Bakery & Deli (lightning fast in our experience), Wintergreen Resort (but no longer offered to the public, only registered guests and WPI members, so it requires a password) and over at Rapunzel’s in Lovingston (good and reliable) and Lovingston Cafe (also good and reliable). Someone mentioned to me that the restaurant in the Lovingston Opry may have wi-fi as well, but we have no personal knowledge on that one. Hope that helps! -T-

  7. Just wanted to let Java Depot know that our lunch the other day was very good! I had the smoked chicken sandwich.
It’s great to have a place so close, with good, interesting offerings. Next it’ll be the Brie!! Yum!
    Great job!
