NCL has learned former South District Board of Supervisor Harry Harris died Monday night after battling cancer. Featured in the March 2009 issue of Nelson County Life, Harris was born in Elma in 1940, and made history as the first black American to serve on the Nelson County School Board, and later, the Board of Supervisors. Harris had recently retired from the Board of Supervisors to spend more time caring for his mother, Zell S. Harris, who passed away in December at the age of 91.

  1. Deepest sympathy to the family. He was a true advocate for the seniors of Nelson county. He will be missed.

  2. My deepest sympathy to Harry’s family. Harry cared about the people of Nelson County and always made time to listen to what others had to say. We have lost a good friend.

  3. Mr.Harris has done so much for the Nelson County Community. I have known him for many years and he always has tried to do what is best for everyone. I will miss his smile, wave and conversations no matter where he was, he would take that time for others. He was very supportive of athletics in Nelson and followed the progress of all the teams. Although we will miss him tremendously, None of us would want to see him suffer here on Earth. Heaven has gotten another angel in Harry Harris. My prayers and heart goes out to Margaret and the rest of the family.
