Nelson County Life has learned that Wilson Elementary School in neighboring Augusta County was put under a “precautionary lockdown” after school staff received reports of a man with a gun in the woods, says Assistant Superintendent of Administration for Augusta County Public Schools, George Earhart. “We take things seriously.”

The lockdown was campus wide, affecting the elementary, middle and high school buildings. Once local authorities gave the go-ahead for a modified lockdown, the schools proceeded with dismissing students for the day.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the report of the gunman; a canine search is underway, we are told.
