Nelson County, Virginia

As of 3 PM EST moderate to sometimes heavy snow started falling in portions of Nelson County, Virginia. Temperatures around 3:45 PM we were just above the freezing mark at 34° in the Rockfish Valley here at our office, Up on the mountain at our station atop The Wintergreen Nature Foundation at 3500 feet, plenty of cold air is available with a late afternoon temp of 26°. Snowfall in the valley is melting on contact since temps are not at freezing just yet, but they will fall to just below freezing in the overnight hours.

Currently a coastal low pressure area will continue working up the eastern seaboard and any change in the track of that low will affect how much snow we will see. Right now the heavier snow amounts look to be east of I-95, but amounts even in the neighborhood of 4-7 inches are very possible in our area. The more significant snowfall will come after dark.

LOW PRESSURE OVER SOUTH CAROLINA WILL DEEPEN AS IT MOVES UP THE
SOUTHEAST AND MID ATLANTIC COASTS OVERNIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING.
THIS LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BRING SNOW TO THE MID ATLANTIC
REGION.

THE PERIOD OF HEAVIEST SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR LATE
THIS EVENING INTO EARLY MONDAY MORNING…WHEN HEAVIER BANDS OF
SNOW WILL MOVE ACROSS THE REGION.

THE HIGHEST TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO RUN ALONG
AND JUST TO THE EAST OF INTERSTATE 95…WHERE TOTAL SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS OF 7 TO 9 INCHES ARE EXPECTED. THIS INCLUDES
WASHINGTON DC AND BALTIMORE.

TO THE WEST OF INTERSTATE 95…A TIGHTER GRADIENT OF SNOWFALL
ACCUMULATION WILL OCCUR. A RANGE OF 4 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW IS
EXPECTED WEST OF INTERSTATE 95…WITH LOCATIONS NEAR THE BLUE
RIDGE FAVORING THE LOWER END OF THE SNOWFALL RANGE.

GUSTY WINDS WILL ALSO DEVELOP OVERNIGHT INTO MONDAY. WIND GUSTS
UP TO 35 MPH WILL LEAD TO BLOWING SNOW.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. THIS WILL
MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE.

  1. Tommy, would it be possible to add the time of the last update. I find myself refreshing often to see if there has been a change in info.
