Nelson County, Virginia
It’s been one busy weekend across Nelson County, Virginia. Yep! The skiing has been great, but lots more has been taking place as well. Like the wine and cheese pairing Saturday night over at Wintergreen Winery.

Below, cross the road diagonally from Wintergreen Winery and head into Devils Backbone Brewing Company and chances are you were hard pressed to find a seat Saturday night.

We did mention skiing didn’t we? And there was no lack of that. As we told you here over the weekend, the long MLK holiday has been one of the best at Wintergreen Resort in recent memory.

And even Sunday night, the fun continued. Below, our Paul Purpura caught up with folks as the first Rail Jam of the winter season.

Rail Jam Photos By Paul Purpura ©2009 NCL Magazine : There were several obstacles in the terrain park that could be ridden, such as the A-Frame, as well as a corrugated drain pipe. There was also a rainbow rail too, as well as several others. Contestants were judged on the level of difficulty of the obstacle, style, and over all riding ability. Cash prizes were given out for the 3 top winners. Paul tells us.

Head on up the road to the northern part of the county in Afton and folks at Blue Mountain Brewery got a special treat as The Stoned Masons performed on a chilly Sunday afternoon.

The crowd enjoyed custom brews while listening to the duo.

Back down in Nellysford, folks with The Almost Home SPCA Animal Shelter held Chili and Chat at the Tuckahoe Club House in Stoney Creek. It gave people an opportunity to look at the history of the shelter just north of Lovingston and to discuss plans about the future.

There was lots of talk about pets, but there was plenty of good food, like chili!

A quick reminder, this is the year of The Animal House Ball that benefits The Almost Home SPCA shelter. It’s being held in May. Be looking for more details in the coming weeks!

I am tired from covering all everything this weekend, and there’s even more, check it out in our February printed edition of NCL out late this month!

  1. WOW! What a week-end of entertainment in Nelson. We are fortunate to have such talented musicians as our neighbors: Chris Leva, Joey Damiano, Bobby St Ours, etc…..
One correction, though. While Robert St Ours and Friends used to play with the band, The Hackensaw Boys, they are not that band. Nettwerk recording artists, The Hackensaw Boys, are alive and well in their own persona, and currently continuing to tour across the nation promoting the release of their latest CD, “Look Out”. You can see more at http://www.hackensawboys.com

  2. Hey Jace, thanks for checking in, and thanks for the correction. I have made the change. We had some incorrect information given to us, but glad to set the record straight, don’t want to take anything away from any of the bands!!

  3. “We didn’t move here for the SHOPPING,” said one of our neighbors. That said, we sure are fortunate to have such a wide range of events and talents to choose from right in our own back yard. Kudos to the both breweries and the wineries for taking the initiative to create enjoyable venues to showcase our local talents. Thanks to NCL for helping us know our Nelson.
