A developing coastal low pressure system off the coast of North Carolina combined with a high pressure area over New England will combine to create windy conditions this afternoon into Thursday. A High Wind Watch has been issued by the NWS starting Thursday morning into the late evening.

Here’s a portion of that advisory:
The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a
high wind watch…which is in effect from Thursday morning
through late Thursday night for counties along and west of the
Blue Ridge.

A strong low pressure system will move inland from the Carolina
coast as high pressure remains over New England. The mid Atlantic
will be located in a tight pressure gradient between the two
systems…which will result in sustained easterly upslope winds
of 40 mph with brief gusts to 60 mph…mainly across the higher
elevations Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon.

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
high wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph…or gusts of
58 mph or stronger may occur. Continue to monitor the latest
forecasts from the National Weather Service

Obviously folks living on the mountains in places such as Montebello and Wintergreen, need to pay particular attention to this on Thursday.

Look for wind driven rain to develop on Thursday as well. The most gusty winds will subside by Friday but rain continues until midday Saturday. Rain predictions from NOAA’s Hydromet Prediction Center
