Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of “Meet the Press,” has died after collapsing at NBC’s Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.

Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo’s press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.

In his role as host of the seminal Sunday morning political program “Meet the Press” – which he took over in 1991 – he became renowned for his hard-nosed interviews where he frequently cornered some of Washington’s cagiest political figures with tough questions.

Russert joined NBC News in 1984. In April 1985, he supervised the live broadcasts of the Today program from Rome, negotiating and arranging an appearance by Pope John Paul II – a first for American television. In 1986 and 1987 Russert led NBC News weeklong broadcasts from South America, Australia and China.

In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

  1. Now THERE’S a loss!!!!!!!!!!! A real sad hole in Tv’s otherwise biased and dowdy news coverage

  2. What a shock! I watch Brian Williams on the news and Tim Russert was always there giving the news of the election, etc, He will be surely missed by all that watched the news.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and collegues during this tragic time. My prayers are with him. May he rest in peace.

  3. This is hard to believe. I watch Tim Russert all of the time on “Meet the Press.” He was fair and balanced and very professional. He seemed like an easy going person. God bless his family and friends. This is a loss and just goes to show you how we argue over petty issues like power, money and ego, but what does it matter in the end? When death comes knocking at the door, there’s no more time to contribute anything positive to life, so it’s best to do our best at whatever it is we do best as best we can. I believe to his credit, he did the best job he could in representing the station.

  4. He will be greatly missed. There was no one on TV news that I would rather watch. Chris Mathews and Keith Oberman will be at a loss when they cover the 2008 Presidental Race without Tim. May God be with Big Russ and his family at this tragic time.

  5. With Deep Sympathy in the loss of a good person. My prayers and thoughts go out to the Russet family and friends.
    From a fan in Connecticut,
    Terri

  6. My prayers go to the family that lost a great man. I am sad for the Country that lost a great journalist. Mr Russert always searched for the truth no matter what. Maybe one of these days there will be a Russert Award given to a journalist who best represents their profession as Tim did. He will be sorely missed.
