It takes a long, long time to get really good at growing tasty vegetables and everything else on the farm for that matter. Thankfully you don’t have to wait to be an expert! Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line in Afton do it for you.

Spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage and veggie start, along with 6 kinds of lettuce and 26 types of heirloom tomatoes and sweet or HOT peppers are just some of what you’ll find at their new farm market right on Route 151. They even have pineapple and watermelons to boot!

I never would eat asparagus as a kid but now I love it, and they have plenty of it. Try grilling it sometime with just a touch of olive oil and pepper! Mmm, mm. Then there’s , meat, and fresh baked bread along with a so many other vegetables I can even list them all.

The beautiful new farm market is OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW!

You can always visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call ’em at 540-456-7100.

Thanks to our Diana Garland for today’s weather pic straight from the strawberry patch over at Seaman’s Orchard in Roseland. Now those are some nice, nice strawberries! As a matter of fact we have a quart in our fridge right now! That’s going to be good with some ice cream this weekend!

Also you’ll notice a couple of events this weekend highlighted at the top. One of our favorites, Jenn Rhubright of Arrington and Jive Katze will be playing this Saturday night at The Mark Addy Inn. You’ve heard them here on our weathercast before, and we’ll play one of their song’s in just a minute as we wind up the weather.

Also, A Shadow of Honor continues this weekend through Sunday at The Earl Hamner Theater. It’s is a fantastic presentation about a real murder and trial here in Nelson County, well worth going to see!

Friday was another very nice day and considerably warmer than Thursday, with temps reaching the middle 80’s in the valley and the mid 70’s on the mountains.

The first part of the weekend has chances for thunderstorms on Saturday, more likely in the afternoon, then sun moving back in by Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, the NWS talked about the chances for severe weather on Saturday. We still need to watch this system, but as I talked about Thursday, I am not convinced the main source of energy will make it far enough south to cause a widespread severe weather outbreak.

The guys at the weather service have backed way off of their wording in the latest hazardous weather outlook Thursday evening.:

FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY
A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL BRING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE
AREA ON SATURDAY. SOME STORMS MAY BE SEVERE.

Updated wording from Friday night’s HWO discussion as of 8:30 PM EDT:

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP EARLY
SATURDAY AFTERNOON AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT. SOME OF THE STORMS
COULD BE SEVERE…WITH DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL. THE STRONGEST
STORMS WILL AFFECT THE AREA BETWEEN NOON AND 4 PM.

Now with all of that being said, it is still a possibility. Given the right dynamics, we could see some pretty powerful thunderstorms, but again the odds aren’t in favor for Nelson just yet. I will continue to monitor this and if it looks like it’s about to happen I’ll update accordingly.

By Sunday we end up partly sunny again by noon and temps in the 80’s. Rain is possibly again by mid week. Temps stay mild and seasonal through the period.

JIVE KATZE PUB PHOTO
Jive Katze plays this Saturday night, May 31st from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM at The Mark Addy Inn.

According to the online urban dictionary a “Jive Cat” is “not the ordinary person you or your homeboys would hang out with”. And what has a less jiving, less hip and less swinging reputation than a “German Jazz Cat” anyway? – Well, Jive Katze is not your ordinary Jazz band.

Jive Katze is the newest addition to the diverse Charlottesville music scene. They combine the vocal Jazz in the tradition of Billy Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald with contemporary forms and concepts influenced by Brad Mehldau, Kenny Werner and Kevin Hays.

Jenn Rhubright’s intimate renditions of Jazz classics meet the sensitive and versatile playing of German born pianist Gerrit Roessler. Jenn contributes her unorthodox approach to music as well as her vast experience with rock and pop from her nationally acclaimed bands Clare Quilty and The Dirty Dishes. Gerrit on the other hand has a background as a formally trained Jazz musician and paid his dues playing mostly in Europe with his award winning band Mars Attacks but also frequently in the US.

It is the difference, even the artistic tension that makes their project so interesting: Sometimes only subtly and carefully altering the divine masters, sometimes overhauling them drastically to create something entirely new. Although they are not a retro-Jazz band that attempts to re-enact an alleged golden past they are respectfully aware of the vast tradition of vocal Jazz and are trying to translate it into the world of today. The result is an intimate and energetic performance that is strongly shared by the audience during their performances.

Although Jive Katze is conceptualized as a duo, Jenn and Gerrit are frequently backed up by Bassist David Cosper from South Carolina and Drummer Granville Mullings from New York.

Jive Katze is not in it for the money. They play for their love of music. That is why they decided to support a non-profit organization that is dedicated “to revitalizing the music and cultural community within the neighborhoods of New Orleans by helping its tradition bearers return to and stay at home.” By financially and actively engaging with Sweet Home New Orleans, Jive Katze feel they are reaching out to a vast musical tradition and heritage on more than the mere artistic level.
