Not long ago I went back to Tennessee to visit my folks on the farm. You’ve heard me talk about my days back there as a kid. They were some mighty good ones, just like my grown up days here in the mountains. I was remembering this old man that lived across the road by the name of, Son Johnson. I’d always walk up to his house and remember those chickens running all over the place. He was farm raising eggs and meat long before it was trendy. Just good, down home, quality food.
Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton do the same thing.
My old friend Son is long gone these days. His house isn’t even there anymore, but Ken and Yvonne’s is. Right now they have spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage and veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce, 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, plus sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT peppers! Heck for your Hawaiian flair how about pineapple, and back home…maybe a little watermelon!
And look what else they have: asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

The beautiful new farm market is OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and just on the horizon, hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around.

Band Fair 2008, the 6th annual, is in the history books now! In spite of the cool temps and an occasional light shower, this year’s event went off perfectly with lots of folks coming out for an afternoon of fun as you can see in the photo above. They had a silent auction, music, games, and much, much more! You can see more pictures from Sunday’s event by clicking here.

Most folks stayed in the dry Sunday, though showers weren’t far away much of the afternoon, the stronger storms forecast never developed since we stayed under cloud cover about the entire day. That kept the temperatures down and the potential for thunderstorm development low. Some locations south and east did see some thunderstorm development, but again most places in Nelson didn’t get much out of the system as it worked through Central Virginia. By late evening skies were clearing either side of the BRP and much of the night was partly cloudy or clear.
Today will be a nice one! Mostly sunny skies and mild temps, however breezy winds will still make it feel chilly from time to time. Tonight rain is back in after midnight continuing through roughly Tuesday afternoon. After that, we finally break the pattern of the past month and, at least right now, the extended forecast into Memorial Day weekend looks dry and mild. Beyond that it looks like hotter, temperatures will finally start becoming more commonplace.
