Summer Lake Days

*See references to severe weather possibility & heat advisory below

Thursday was a perfect day weatherwise. With lots of high pressure in place across Virginia the skies remained sunny for the entire day allowing temps to warm into the 80’s for just about everyone. It was a great day to play in the water like the kid above at Lake Monacan. You’ll be looking for a cool spot today. It is going to be hot, very hot! There is a heat advisory, details below.
And we’ll be doing a special forecast (below) today for the folks making the trip down to Radford for the soccer competition Nelson High is going to play in. This is big, if they win today they go into the final round Saturday. Yvette will be there covering the whole thing and bring you updates right here on the website as the game is played. Be sure to check back often Friday and over the weekend for the most recent info and pictures from Radford. The game starts at 2PM.

In weather let’s first talk about that Heat advisory. Here’s the official version fron the National Weather Service:

URGENT – WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC
351 AM EDT FRI JUN 8 2007

HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
8 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

SOUTHWEST WINDS AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT WILL BRING HOT AND HUMID AIR
INTO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION TODAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED
TO RISE INTO THE MID 90S BY LATE AFTERNOON. THIS COMBINED WITH
HIGH HUMIDITY WILL RESULT IN HEAT INDEX VALUES UP TO 100 DEGREES.

RELIEF FROM THE HEAT IS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY AS COOLER AND LESS
HUMID AIR MOVES INTO THE REGION WITH THE PASSAGE OF A COLD FRONT.

No need to preach about this and tell you the sky is falling like all of the television forecasters will, just use common sense and you’ll be fine. It’s going to be hot, but it’s no crisis.

On the current surface map below, a warm front has moved north through the area allowing warm muggy conditions to return to Central Virginia. Today dewpoints will be in the 60’s and perhaps even the 70’s. Thanks to SW winds bringing up plenty of warm mosit air.
Current-Sat Surface Map

Below, on the National Forecast Map, a cold front to the west makes its way into Central Virginia and Nelson this evening. Scatttered thunderstorms (some possibly severe – best time between 5-10 PM) will break out this as the front approaches. High pressure takes back over for the weekend bringing slightly cooler temps and sunny conditions.
Today’s Forecast Map

RADFORD SOCCER FORECAST:
If you’re traveling to Radford for the soccer game look for partly sunny skies early in the day, with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Not everyone will see rain in that area but about 40% of the area will. High temps will be around 90 degrees, so it’s going to be a hot day there as well, just not as hot as here. When the game starts at 2PM look for partly cloudy skies temps right at 90 degrees and scattered thunderstorms in the area. Tonight in Radford look for mostly cloudy skies, thunderstorms scattered about with lows in the mid 60’s. Winds west around 10 MPH with gusts up to 20. Saturday in Radford look for partly sunny skies and scattered thunderstorms again, diminishing as the day goes on. Highs around 85 degrees.
