Update : 1:15 patient extracted and transported to UVA Medical Center

12:45 PM Update : Patient is being taken out now to waiting medical helicopter.

Rescue crews are on the scene around noon Saturday where a cyclist has gone over a ravine on Crabtree Falls Highway (Route 56 West) near the Montebello Country Store.

Various squads including Wintergreen Fire & Rescue along with Montebello have responded and are working to get the cyclist up and out.

More details as we have them.

  1. Right now we have nothing to update. He or she was transported by helicopter to UVA Med Center and that’s the last information we had. Tommy

  2. The cyclist is awake and stable at UVA. He will undergo surgery to stabilize the fractures. I was riding with him and GREATLY appreciate the huge effort by Montebello fire; Wintergreen EMS and Pegasus.

  3. Tommy— sure…..he is having surgery tomorrow— no release of his name until family consents….

  4. Tommy– yes an experienced cyclist. That morning our group of 7 bikers had climbed Reeds Gap, descended Loves Gap and climbed Vesuvius. We were heading back to Nellysford when the accident happened
