As the weather continues to warm many road improvement projects are getting into high gear across the region. Here’s a list of the latest as of Friday – March 24, 2017.

LYNCHBURG DISTRICT TRAFFIC ALERT
March 27-31, 2017

LYNCHBURG – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is scheduled, weather permitting. Items in italics contain new/updated information. For up-to-date information, call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org.

Amherst County:
29 Business, Town of Amherst – Shoulder closures possible between 8 1m and 5 pm during maintenance work.
Route 130 over Graham Creek – Traffic will be restricted by a traffic control signal, signage and message boards to one 11’ lane from March 20 – June 20 for bridge deck reconstruction.
Route 130 over Pedlar River- Bridge work; road closed. Detour to new construction/existing Rt. 635. Messages boards, signs and barriers in use. Est. comp. 11/27/17.
Route 501/130 (Hunting Club Rd-existing bridge) – Two-way traffic on new bridge. Construction continues; temporary lane closures possible. Completion 4/21/17.
Surface treatment schedule for Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties – March 27-December 28, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic. Expect delays.

Appomattox County:
Route 660 over North Creek – Road closed Jan. 3 – June 15 for bridge superstructure replacement. Detour via 26, 659, and 613.
Surface treatment schedule for Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties – March 27-December 28, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic. Expect delays.

Buckingham County:
Route 20 over Slate River – Speed reduced during bridge replacement. Est. comp. – 12/2017.
Route 60 (Andersonville AHQ) – Crew will repair asphalt.
Andersonville AHQ- Crew will cut brush and repair shoulders.
Various – Crews will work surfaces and respond to customer concerns.

Campbell County:
Routes 29 & 460 – Crews will work on ramp lights.
Route 501 (0.54 miles south of Route 652 to 0.74 miles north of 635 – Gladys) – From March 27 to May 16, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic during surface work. Expect delays.
Route 501 (Route 654 to Route 686 – Winfall) – From March 30 to June 16, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic during surface work. Expect delays.
Route 601 over Entry Creek (756-645) –Culvert replacement road closure delayed until May 22.
Surface treatment schedule for Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties – March 27-December 28, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic. Expect delays.

Charlotte County:
Route 40 over Louse Creek – Temporary signal in flash mode and will be activated for one-way traffic on March 29, weather permitting. Message boards will alert motorists to this change. Use caution during bridge project. Est. completion July 2017.
Routes 47 & 360 – Signal work will result in outage of intersection warning flashers and STOP sign flashing beacons. Message boards will alert motorists during these operations.
Craftons Gate AHQ – Crew will install mainline/driveway pipe.
Phenix AHQ – Crew will trim trees.
Various – Crews will boom ax, work shoulders and surfaces and respond to customer requests.

Cumberland County:
Route 45 @ 684 & 616 – Sign crews will address work orders.
Route 600 over Green Creek (Rt 653-657) – Road closed from 3/6-6/9 for structure replacement. Detour via 653, 638, 45 and 657.
Route 644 over Big Guinea Creek (631-600) – Closed from 8 am to 5 pm on March 24-28 for geology work. Detour via 600 & 631.
Various – Crews will cut brush, work surfaces and respond to customer requests.

Halifax County:
Route 58, Cluster Springs AHQ – Crew will work shoulders.
Routes 360 at 47 and 501 at 658 – Sign crews will respond to work orders.
Route 501 (South Boston to NC line) – Crews will work line markings.
Route 501 @ 642 – Turn lane construction project.
Route 501, Cluster Springs AHQ – Crew will cut and chip brush.
Route 658, Cluster Springs AHQ – Crew will install mainline pipe.
Route 707 over Coleman Creek (Rt. 718-658) – Road will be closed from Feb. 13 – June 2 for structure replacement. Detour via routes 718 and 658.
Bethel AHQ – Crew will work surfaces.
Volens AHQ– Crew will boom and cut right of way on secondary routes.
Various –Crews will work shoulders and respond to customer requests.

Lynchburg:
Greenview Drive widening- Changes in traffic pattern during project. Completion- July 2017.
Route 29/460 Corridor eastbound/westbound from Concord Turnpike to Candlers Mtn Rd: Speed reduced to 45 mph for construction throughout the corridor.
Route 29/460 (501-29)– Construction traffic entering/exiting roadway. Weather permitting, lane closures may be in place from 9 pm, Friday to 6 am, Sunday, excluding holiday weekends until further notice. Use caution. Est. comp. 11/16/17. Speed reduced to 45 mph.
Route 29/460 (Odd Fellows Rd Int. and Odd Fellows Rd.)– In April, anticipate nighttime detours during setting of bridge girders. Construction traffic entering/exiting roadway. Temporary lane closures on 460 & Odd Fellows likely; Odd Fellows & Mayflower may be closed during roundabout construction. Est. comp. 8/3/18. Speed reduced to 45 mph.
Route 460, area of LU campus – LU/English Construction. bridge project.

Nelson County:
Route 151 & 635 , Route 6 & 638 int. – Intersections improvements. Traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic. Expect delays. Estimated completion October 16, 2017.
Surface treatment schedule for Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties – March 27-December 28, traffic control devices and flaggers will direct traffic. Expect delays.

Pittsylvania County:
Route 29 S over Norfolk-Southern RR –Bridge replacement. Rt. 29/803 connection temporarily relocated. Southbound traffic detoured to northbound lane. Est. comp. 6/20/17.
US 29, Gretna AHQ – Crew will apply stone to crossovers.
Route 40, Gretna AHQ – Crew will install mainline pipe for turning lane at hospital.
Route 58, east and west of Danville – Crews will work on line markings.
Route 682 over Shokoe Creek( 686-1094) – Road closed April 3-May 12 for culvert replacement. Detour via 686 to 640.
Route 761 (600-639) – Road closed for bridge replacement. Detour via routes 600, 602 and 601. Completion – 12/4/17.
Route 903 over Whitethorn Creek (Rt. 995-676) – Road closed March 6-31 for bridge superstructure replacement. Detour US 29.
Brosville AHQ – Crew will work ditches.
Brosville and Rondo AHQs – Crews will work pipe.
Gretna and Mt. Airy AHQs – Crew will apply stone around mailboxes/driveway entrances .
Kentuck AHQ – Crew will trim trees.
Various –Crews will work surfaces, boom ax and respond to customers.

Prince Edward County:
Various – Crews will work surfaces, cut brush, clean roadsides and ditches, and respond to customer requests.

District-wide activities:
Bridge maintenance – Crews will do bridge washing.
Curve countermeasures- Crews will re-install/install signage.
Guardrail maintenance – Crews will do guardrail maintenance.
Latex Microsurfacing – Crews will perform latex microsurfacing at various locations.
Pavement messaging – Crews will work at various locations.
Pipe rehabilitation – Crews will work on pipes at various locations.

TRAFFIC ALERT FOR MARCH 27 to 31, 2017
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64
Mile marker 5.3 to 5, westbound – Right shoulder closure for drainage system repairs, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated project completion summer 2017.
(UPDATE) Mile marker 8 to 11, eastbound and westbound – Left lane closure on bridge over Route 600 (Indian Draft Road) for bridge work. Lane closure in place 24/7 from 6:30 a.m. Monday to 7:30 p.m. Friday through March 30.
(UPDATE) Mile marker 18 to 20, eastbound – Right lane and shoulder closed for tree removal operations March 27 to April 28, 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

PRIMARY ROADS
Various roads – Patching with a mobile operation at various locations. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SECONDARY ROADS
(UPDATE) Route 600 (Indian Draft Road) Callaghan area – Flagger controlled lane closures on Route 600 at I-64 overpass for bridge work. 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Friday through March 30.
Route 718 (Rucker Gap Road) – Alternating lane closures to West Virginia state line for Rural Rustic Road project. Lengthy delays possible through April 28, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Frontage Road 199 (Frontier Lane) – Road closed to through traffic. Right shoulder closures as crews repair paved channel along frontage road and westbound I-64 west of exit 7. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion summer 2017.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement at various locations. Mobile lane closures as needed for brush cutting and patching at various locations. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS
No lane closures reported.

SECONDARY ROADS
(NEW) Route 687 (Jackson River Turnpike) – Traffic restricted to single lane with temporary signal during Cascades Creek bridge replacement. Estimated completion October 30.
Various roads – Mobile lane closures as needed for brush cutting and pothole repairs at various locations. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64
Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Single-lane traffic through work zone. Westbound drivers use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic limited to the right lane. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Estimated project completion summer 2017.
Mile marker 56, westbound (near I-81/I-64 interchange in Lexington area) – Bridge closed for repairs over Route 763 (Lincoln Road) and Mill Creek beginning 8 p.m. March 20 through March 31. I-81 exit 191 at I-64 will also be closed. I-81 northbound and southbound traffic headed west on I-64 will use I-81 exit 195 and take Route 11 south to I-64.

INTERSTATE 81
(UPDATE) Mile marker 173 to 177, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for bridge painting. March 26 to April 1, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
(UPDATE) Mile marker 180 to 179, southbound – Right shoulder closures for utility installation. Weekdays through April 7, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(UPDATE) Mile marker 193 to 192, southbound – Right shoulder closures for utility installation. Weekdays through June 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Northbound traffic will follow median crossovers on both ends of the work zone. Estimated project completion fall 2018.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 663 (Artz Road) – Bridge replacement over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Road is open during construction of the new bridge, with flagger controlled lane closures 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. Estimated completion May 2018.
Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger controlled lane closures during daylight hours. Monday through Friday.
(NEW) Route 675 (Stoney Creek Road) – Road closing April 3 for bridge replacement at Stoney Creek. Work zone in Columbia Furnace area, about five miles north of Edinburg and 0.33-mile south of Route 42 (Senedo Road). Follow posted detours. Estimated completion Spring 2018.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Motorists should be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone during interchange reconstruction project. Speed limit 60 mph through work zone. Estimated project completion May 2017.

PRIMARY ROADS
(NEW) Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Right lane closures as needed (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and shoulder work (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for roadway and turn-lane work from Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) to Frederick /Clarke County line. March 23 to April 7.
Route 11 at Route 661 (Welltown Road) – Left lane closed overnight for road construction project from I-81 overpasses to Route 11 south ramp. Sunday through Thursday nights, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Estimated project completion December 15.
(NEW) Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) – Right lane and shoulder closed for Opequon Creek bridge inspection (Clarke/Frederick county line). March 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 661 (Welltown Road) – Overnight lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. for Route 11/661 intersection improvement project in Stephenson area just north of Winchester. Estimated project completion December 15.

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS
(NEW) Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) – Right lane and shoulder closed for Opequon Creek bridge inspection (Clarke/Frederick county line). March 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
(NEW) Route 255 – Alternating lane closures for paving operations from Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) to Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway). Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 19.

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66
(NEW) Mile marker 6.6 to 0 (including I-81 ramps), westbound – Lane closures as needed for paving operations from 8 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday (no work during evening commuter traffic). Estimated completion June 16.
INTERSTATE 81

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road): Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection. Temporary traffic switch for east and west lanes from 340/522 to .03 miles (A. S. Rhodes Elementary School) west of 340/522. Pavement markings, signs and traffic barrels will guide drivers through this area. Changes in effect through summer 2017 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.
Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road). Brief nighttime lane closures during delivery of bridge beams through March 2017. Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Lane shift at 17th street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection. 18th street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017. Estimated project completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road). Detours: Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 north and turn right on Route 17/50 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour. Estimated project completion June 2018.
Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger controlled lane closures during daylight hours. Monday through Friday.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.

ROUTE 726 IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY CLOSED MARCH 27 – 29 FOR SLOPE REPAIRS

STAUNTON – A portion of Route 726 (Mount Clinton Pike) in Rockingham County will be closed to through traffic from Monday, March 27, through Wednesday, March 29. This closure is for slope repairs between Route 701 (Cooks Creek Road) and Route 752 (Muddy Creek Road).

Drivers who live within the work zone will have access to their properties. Through traffic using Route 726 will follow one of these detour routes:
Eastbound drivers will follow Route 752 south, Route 33 (Rawley Pike) east and then Route 701 north to return to Route 726.
Westbound drivers will follow Route 701 south, Route 33 west and then Route 752 north to return to Route 726.

The work is scheduled to begin about 8 a.m. on March 27 and be complete by 4:30 p.m. on March 29. All work is weather permitting.
